Actor James Cromwell, who stars as Farmer Hoggett in the “Babe” talking pig feature films, was arrested Thursday during a PETA protest at Texas A&M University,” People reports.
“The protest took place during a Board of Regents meeting and called for the school to shut down a laboratory that uses dogs for medical research,” People reports. “Cromwell, who’s been arrested at multiple protests over the years, was charged with ‘hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct’ and booked at the Brazos County Jail, a police department spokesperson told People on Thursday.”
He was reportedly released after posting a $5,000 bond.
In a statement released by PETA, Cromwell is quoted saying: “Texas A&M continues to torment golden retrievers and other dogs, even though decades of these experiments have not led to a cure for humans with muscular dystrophy. It’s time to let the dogs out, and my friends at PETA and I want them released to good homes where they can live out the rest of their lives in peace.”
People adds: “Cromwell was arrested in 2017 at SeaWorld in San Diego while protesting cruelty against orca whales. He was sentenced earlier that year to a week in jail stemming from a 2015 arrest during a protest at an upstate New York power plant.”
Cromwell, who maintains a busy schedule of advocacy and activism, reportedly became a vegan while working on “Babe,” released in 1995. He continues to be actively involved in animal rights causes.
Unfortunately for Mr. Cromwell, his association with Peta does him no credit. Perhaps he should be more communed about animal welfare, rather than animal rights.
