Newly elected members of Congress can provide real change and dramatically affect the future of television as some members of the Senate Commerce Committee fight for their political careers in close Senate races, TVNewsday reports. Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, longtime ally to the broadcast networks, Senate Commerce Committee member and recent convicted felon, is holding onto the smallest of leads over Democratic challenger Mark Begich. The publication notes that a loss for Stevens would mean a loss for the broadcast networks. Senate Commerce Committee member Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., also is fighting for his seat, against Democrat Jeff Merkley. Another member, Sen. John Sununu, R-N.H., lost his race to Democrat Jeanne Shaheen. Democratic members facing re-election all defeated their Republican challengers.
