CBS Becomes Development Model

The fuddy-duddy series on CBS have become the model for shows being developed by the other networks, the Washington Post says. NBC is developing traditional sitcoms; Fox ordered closed-ended dramas and ABC even ordered a Jerry Bruckheimer procedural crime drama, none of which are likely to become critical darlings, but might work on broadcastm the paper says. “All you have to do is look at something like ‘The Mentalist’ and realize there is nothing wildly inventive about it,” one broadcaster tells the Post. “Maybe you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to get a lot of viewers. Maybe it’s more about executing solid concepts than coming up with really cute concepts.”
