Tired of NBC’s Olympics Tape-Delay? Solution May Be Coming in a Few Years

Feb 26, 2010  •  Post A Comment

NBC may be drawing big TV crowds to its Olympics coverage, but not all viewers are happy at having to watch events broken up and on tape-delay.

Relief could come in 2014 and 2016, reports The New York Times. ESPN, which is expected to mount an aggressive bid for the winter and summer games those years, says it would drop tape-delays.

“I don’t think nonlive is sports fan-friendly,” John Skipper, ESPN’s executive vice president for content, told the paper.

  1. Regardless of who gets the next olympics… the future may be live events on the Internet… NBC had a poll on its website feeling the waters of what people would be willing to pay… one of the option was for $30 watch any event live… that sounds like a good deal… then you don’t have to be held for ransom on tape delays… and on just stuff that they want to show you…

  2. I don’t think the complaints are coming from the general public, but from the industry insiders.
The average person is at work when most events are happening LIVE. They would miss so much if events were ONLY shown LIVE. All the skiing events would be seen in the AM and early afternoon. Plus, they would take about 10 times as long to air and, you would miss some downhill skiers because they start them down the hill before the competitor in front of them concludes their run.
I Bet money that IF all the events were shown live, people would complain how they cant see any of the BIG events because they are airing at 3am, or 10am, when they are asleep or at work.
I have really enjoyed these games and I think NBC has done a good job at presenting them. There is always room for improvement, but They have done good.

  3. TV-aholic…………..spot on!

  4. I agree with TV-aholic and riggarob. NBC has the necessary multiple outlets (MSNBC, CNBC, etc.) to carry most of it when viewers are around to watch it.

  5. On the West Coast we are used to this. Virtually every live event (other than traditional sports) is delayed. And the real joke is most of the awards shows are as well and they originate in LA on Pacific time. Further, start times are always given in Eastern, because apparently Westerners are capable of subtracting 3, but Easterners cannot fathom the concept of adding 3.

  6. Ice hockey is an interesting exercise, I like it.
