Georgia TV Station Finds Use for Apple’s iPads, Thus Saving Money by Replacing Paper Scripts

Apr 23, 2010  •  Post A Comment

It’s not just early-adopter gear heads who are snapping up Apple iPads. A Georgia television station has replaced its newscasts’ paper scripts with six entry-level iPads, which cost $499 each, TVNewsCheck reports.

"By using the iPad, we’re saving hundreds of thousands of sheets of paper annually," says news director Terry Graham of Albany, Georgia-based WFXL. "Our projected savings per month are $800, or about $9,600 per year."

Graham also anchors the news at the Fox affiliate’s 6:30 and 10 p.m. shows. After the newscasts scripts are written, the station formats them as PDF files and transmits them to the iPads through email. The PDF formatting comes via a $7 program sold through Apple’s app store. Graham says that he’s likely to buy more iPads given the station’s savings in paper costs.

We previously reported about the company that was making an app so stations could use the iPad as a mobile teleprompter.

  1. What a bunch of baloney.
    Lets do the math.
Claim of saving $800 a month for paper
    $36/case at office depot equals
22 cases at 5000 pages per case per month
This means that Graham is using 3600 sheets of paper per day? Very very hard to believe.

  2. As a voiceover talent I switched to the iPad for my scripts and it’s been perfect to use in sessions. PDF’s are bright and clear (and they can be enlarged too which makes reading them much easier than printed out). I don’t know about cost savings, but it has been a major improvement in my personal studio efficiency. Scripts are emailed to me and I don’t have to take the extra steps of having them faxed or enlarged or printed. Works out nicely I think…but saving thousands in paper costs? I think someone is justifying their PadLust. 😉

  3. He says they will save thousands of sheets of paper annualy, then says what the projiected savings are. I’m assuming they are including the cost of ink, printer lease and maybe even electricity. If they are not printing scipts, they can probably use a smaller printer, adding to the savings.

  4. She didn’t say she was saving the entire amount on paper. You have to figure the total cost of photocopies (or multiple originals), not just the paper. I find the number entirely believable.

  5. Keep focusing on your blog. I love how we can all express our feelings. This is an extremely nice blog here 🙂

  6. I’m still learning from you, while I’m trying to reach my goals. I definitely enjoy reading all that is written on your blog.Keep the stories coming. I loved it!
