A three-time Oscar nominee for best director will produce an upcoming four-hour miniseries for Sony Pictures Television, TheWrap reports.

Ridley Scott will produce a four-hour miniseries for Sony Pictures Television and Germany’s Tandem Communications based on Robert Harris’ novel "Pompeii," the report says.

The best-selling thriller focuses on characters racing to survive the deadly eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which Scott calls "a strong and compelling character drama set against a backdrop of a flourishing but ultimately doomed civilization – exactly what makes great event television."

Scott is the producer and director of the upcoming theatrical feature with Russell Crowe "Robin Hood." Scott is also an executive producer of cable’s "The Good Wife.’

He’ll produce the picture with Judith Verno of "Into Thin Air" and the project will be sold internationally before the MIP convention in Cannes, which begins this week.
