What Does ‘SNL’ Need for Ratings and Laughs? Just 88-Year Old Betty White
What does "Saturday Night Live" need to freshen up its laughs and draw back viewers? Apparently it’s an 88-year old woman, says Dave Itzkoff in the New York Times.

Six-time Emmy Award winner Betty White, who hosted the show after a Facebook campaign that drew hundreds of thousands who urged "SNL" to use her as a guest host, not only created one of the program’s strongest episodes this season but drew its highest ratings in a year in a half. The show delivered a preliminary 8.8 household rating in the country’s 56 largest metered markets, reports TVbytheNumbers.com , its best since its Nov. 1, 2008 episode scored a preliminary 9.0 household rating.

"Saturday’s show was one of the strongest outings of the season. With energy, enthusiasm and plain old laughs, Ms. White and the “SNL” cast and crew (including an ensemble of recent alumnae) more than delivered on this much promoted episode’s promise," wrote Dave Itzkoff in his New York Times’ review of the show.

The Mother’s Day-themed episode brought back female ‘SNL’ alumni, including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Molly Shannon.

Itzkoff concluded, "The only real disappointment of the night was when the clock struck 1 a.m. and Ms. White and the cast had to step on stage to wave their goodbyes. If Facebook could successfully campaign to make Ms. White an “SNL” host, can it now begin the movement to make her a permanent cast member?"

  2. Lorne Michaels needs to find the guy who started the Facebook campaign and buy him dinner – at the very least!
Give credit where credit is due!

  3. The ratings will go up and down based on guests, depite the fact that SNL has sucked, comedy-wise, for 20 years. Until SNL writers actually make a comedy sketch WITHOUT having an underlying goal of turning thier hack tripe into a feature film (MacGruber, Night at the Roxy, and countless worthless others), they will continue to suck. Probably for another 20 years.

  4. People were not tuning in to see the former SNL ladies. People tuned in to see Betty, period.

  6. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
