A renowned Harvard psychologist who also served as chairman of the Children’s Television Workshop from 1969 until 1996, has died at age 84, The New York Times reports.

It’s Gerald Lesser, who helped shape "Sesame Street" into a show that informs young children about their letters and numbers as well as entertains, the article says.

He helped create the goals of "Sesame Street" before its first broadcast in Nov. 1969, the story says.

Lesser brought the show’s staff together with educators and professionals such as advertising executives in seminars to brainstorm ideas.

The article says that because children loved TV commercials, "Sesame Street" created some segments to appear as "commercials" for certain numbers and letters.
