Cable Giant Tackles Rising Price of Sports Channels: Low-Cost Tier Cuts Out ESPN

A giant cable company plans to introduce a new low-cost service tier in an effort to combat rising rates for sports channels — and it won’t include ESPN, reports Deadline.com.

Time Warner Cable’s "TV Essentials" package would cost between $30 and $40 per month and company President Rob Marcus says it will be introduced within weeks to the company’s East Coast subscribers, the story says.

The new package is part of an effort to keep subscribers who otherwise would pull the plug on their cable subscriptions "partly due to affordability," Marcus said at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia Conference, the piece adds.

  1. How long until the cable companies can just come up with a decent a la carte option? I watch mostly broadcast channels so that’s all I subscribe to at this time. However, I’d love to add ESPN’s channels (3 of them?), Disney, Nickelodeon (for my son), TLC and Lifetime (for the wife) and maybe the Weather Channel. All the other channels are unneeded and unwanted and just add bloat to a cable subscriber’s bill if they are anything like the average user. Most folks spend very little time outside a handful of channels.
