The newest documentary from Ken Burns won’t debut first on PBS but instead will be available to iPad and iPhone users starting Sept. 23, a week before its PBS premiere, reports GigaOM.com.

The documentary, “Prohibition,” will then air and be live streamed on PBS’s website on Oct. 2, 3 and 4, the story says. The second and third episodes will be available the day after each TV air date, the story says.

The reason for the early iPhone and iPad release has to due with the return of HBO’s "Boardwalk Empire," the Prohibition-era drama, the story says. The second season of the HBO show will premiere Sept. 25, and PBS said in a statement that releasing the documentary early will allow viewers to understand "what gave rise to Prohibition," the story says.

Ken Burns added in the statement that he and his creative team are "huge fans of ‘Boardwalk Empire,’” the story notes.
