Sony TV Sets Catching Fire, but Not in a Good Way — Company Announces Big Recall

Oct 12, 2011  •  Post A Comment

Citing the chance of fire, Sony is recalling 1.6 million television sets that were sold worldwide, Bloomberg reports.

The Bravia flat-panel sets have a component that could cause them to melt or catch fire, the piece says. Japan’s trade ministry asked Sony to recall the TVs and cited a September incident in which the fire department was called by a consumer after noticing fire and smoke coming from his TV set, the story says.

No injuries have been reported in the 11 incidents of overheating reported in Japan since 2008, the article says, citing a Sony representative. No incidents of overheating have been reported outside of Japan, according to Sony.
