Plunging Viewership for New Show Raises Questions Over Cable Net’s Unusual Strategy

With ratings sinking for a new show, questions have been raised over the unusual strategy the network has adopted with the launch of the show, reports Lynette Rice in EW.com’s Inside TV.

The show is "Boss," starring Kelsey Grammer, and the main question is whether it was a good idea for Starz to renew the show for a second season before the first one had even started, the story says.

The show’s original episode on Friday was watched by only 268,000 viewers, a plunge of 31% from the week before, the story says. The program’s repeat at 10 p.m. drew 131,000 viewers, a 52% plunge from the previous week.

Renewing a show before the season starts is "a move that doesn’t always turn out well," Rice points out.

Rice notes that the poor viewer turnout is despite that Grammer “may be doing some of the best work of his career” on the show.

  1. Maybe it’s just that Kelsey Grammer sucks, and the public hates his guts!

  2. When you invite the wife you’re cheating on to your premiere in NYC, just so you can treat her like crap on national TV, it’s hard to remain America’s Sweetheart. Kelsey Grammer has worn out his welcome.
