A reality television star is ranked among this year’s top "shared" items — events that are shared via links among friends on sites such as Facebook, reports The New York Times’ Media Decoder blog.

That reality star is Kim Kardashian, with her divorce ranking among the top shared items this year, the story found, citing a study from Clearspring.

Other top shared events included the killing of Osama bin Laden, the Japanese tsunami, Occupy Wall Street protests, the earthquakes that hit the East Coast in August, the royal wedding, Hurricane Irene and Steve Jobs’ death, the piece notes.

Facebook dominated "sharing," with 52% of all sharing taking place on the social-media platform, the story says. Twitter, by comparison, was at 13.5%, with other sites in single digits.

Google+1 saw sharing increase more than 300%, but has leveled off, the piece adds.
