NBC’s Entire Thursday Lineup Sinks to Season Lows; Soft Premiere for ABC’s New Shonda Rhimes Drama

ABC’s new drama from "Grey’s Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes premiered to mediocre ratings Thursday night, TVbytheNumbers.com reports. “Scandal” pulled in a 2.1 average rating in the 18-49 demo, finishing second in its 10 p.m. time period to CBS’s “The Mentalist” (2.4).

That was still better than the results for NBC, which saw season lows for its prime-time lineup, including “Community” (down four-tenths to a 1.3 average in 18-49), “30 Rock” (down three-tenths to a 1.2), “Up All Night” (down two-tenths to a 1.1) and “Awake” (down one-tenth to a 0.9).

CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” was down too, but still led all shows with a 4.2 average in 18-49, while “American Idol” plunged six-tenths of a ratings point to a 3.8 average, still good enough to help Fox eke out a narrow win for prime time.

Fox finished with a 3.0 average rating for the night in the 18-49 demo, ahead of CBS (2.9), ABC (2.1), Univision (1.5) and NBC (1.1). CBS won total viewers with 12.3 million, followed by Fox (10.6 million), ABC (7.6 million), Univision (3.6 million) and NBC (2.7 million).

  1. I would guess the problem is that they only measure responses from people who are watching these shows at their designated times OR people are finding other things to do (the weather is rather nice out). I, myself, DVR/DTR every show I watch. It cuts down almost a third of the time by skipping commercials and I can rewind or pause if I missed something or need to answer the phone. If they can figure out the number of people who “time shift”, their numbers would probably go up dramatically.

  2. They seem to show reruns whenever they please and expect people to keep up with whether things are reruns or first runs. Just show the first run episodes back to back until they run out instead of sticking in all the reruns in between.
