ABC News Team Honored With Polk Award

Feb 19, 2008  •  Post A Comment

ABC News senior foreign correspondent Jim Sciutto, producer Angus Hines and field producer/cameraman Tom Murphy won a 2007 George Polk Award for their reporting on the brutal government crackdown on dissidents in Myanmar and its aftermath last year.
The trio made two trips, the second posing as tourists because foreign journalists were banned by the repressive regime, for the reports they filed for “World News With Charles Gibson.” They recorded their reports with digital cameras and cell phones, evading the authorities by doing interviews in such settings as moving taxis.
The award also recognized their continuing reports from neighboring Thailand, which included material smuggled out of Myanmar by various means.
Their honor was among 14 Polk Awards announced Tuesday by Long Island University. All will be presented April 17 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. The awards are presented for work in the tradition of CBS correspondent George W. Polk, who was killed in 1948 while covering the civil war in Greece.
