Fox News Channel was back in its familiar driver’s seat at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. Fox easily dominated Tuesday night’s cable and broadcast ratings in the 10 o’clock hour with 6.2 million viewers, according to the holiday-delayed data released Thursday morning by Nielsen Media Research.
NBC had the second-largest audience in that relatively low-key Tuesday hour with 4.51 million.
CNN was third with an average 3.22 million viewers for the 10-11 p.m. hour, beating out ABC (3.1 million viewers), CBS (2.98 million viewers) and MSNBC, which lost most of its Democratic convention bounce and dropped to last place with 1.59 million viewers.
For the prime-time hours of 8-11 p.m. Tuesday, Fox News averaged 5.1 million viewers, about double CNN’s 2.51 million and more than three times MSNBC’s 1.42 million.
In the 25-54 demo that drives advertising in news programming, Fox also led at 10 o’clock Tuesday with 1.61 million viewers and for prime time with an average 2.21 million viewers.
CNN, which dominated in all categories with its coverage of last week’s Democratic National Convention, logged 958,000 viewers in the 25-54 demo at 10 and an average 1.31 million from 8 to 11 p.m.
MSNBC logged 1.275 million viewers in the demo at 10 and 570,000 throughout prime time.
