Golf Channel Swings Into HD
The Golf Channel’s high-definition channel has launched in nearly 16 million homes, TelevisionWeek reported. The channel will feature coverage of the first three events of the PGA Tour from Hawaii, marking the first time the events have aired in HD. Other HD programming, including “Golf in America,” will be shown on the network.
2012 London Olympics Could Be Broadcast in 3-D
British broadcaster Sky hinted that there is a very strong possibility the 2012 Summer Olympics in London will be aired in 3-D, tech blog Pocket-lint reported. The blog quoted Brian Lenz, head of Sky’s product design and innovation, as saying there’s a very good chance the Games will be in 3-D and that Sky has already begun shooting events in 3-D.
JVC Set to Debut First Blu-ray Player in the U.S.
JVC, which sells Blu-ray players overseas, will launch its first stand-alone Blu-ray player in the United States in March, the company said. The unit, JVC XV-BP1, will feature BD Live compatibility and AVCHD playback, a standard format among high-definition camcorders. The player is hitting stores with a suggested retail price of $299.95.
‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ Gets Super Bowl 3-D Premiere
DreamWorks’ “Monsters vs. Aliens” will hit theaters March 27, but a three-minute sneak preview will air in 3-D during the Super Bowl on Feb. 1, the Associated Press reported. Nearly 150 million pairs of 3-D glasses will be made available at 28,000 locations, including grocery and electronics stores, the AP said. DreamWorks Animation Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Katzenberg said he believes this is the largest media-advertising event in history, and promises the 3-D process being used will be better than the technology seen in the past.
‘Ghostbusters’ Gets HD Treatment in June
Sony confirmed that comedy “Ghostbusters” will get a Blu-ray release in June, High-Def Digest reported. Aside from the film, the 25th-anniversary edition will contain new featurettes, including an inside look at the Ghostbusters’ firehouse headquarters and an analysis of the Ecto-1, the Web site said. The release also will contain a collectible 32-page booklet. The Blu-ray release will hit stores on June 16, alongside a standard DVD set.
