The pilot of “Caprica,” the “Battlestar Galatica” prequel which shows the origins of the Cylons, will be coming out direct on DVD on April 21, even though the show isn’t slated to air until 2010, io9.com reports. One of the reasons behind issuing the DVD, is to allow viewers to give feedback to the show’s creative team before production begins this summer, Sci Fi executive VP Mark Stern tells the science-fiction fan Web site.

  1. Reading this little piece, I’m left to wonder how can production begin after the DVD is released. Just askin’.

  2. The DVD is just one episode — the pilot. The pilot was produced first and no other episodes have yet to be made. Pilots are usually made and presented to studio executives so they can decide whether to produce more.
In this case, Sci Fi ordered the pilot, liked it enough to buy more episodes — pretty typical for TV networks. What’s unusual is that the studio is using the lag time between producing the pilot and the rest of season one to release the pilot on DVD.
