Tweety Who? Warner Bros. Plans Looney Tunes Show to Revive Classic Characters

May 20, 2010  •  Post A Comment

After years of baby versions and anime takes on Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, Warner Bros. is seeking to revive its Looney Tunes franchise by returning to classic versions of the characters many parents today grew up with, reports Brooks Barnes in the New York Times

Cartoon Network will air a new 26-episode half-hour series, "The Looney Tunes Show," with Bugs and Daffy living as roommates on a cul-de-sac whose residents include Yosemite Sam, Tweety Bird, Porky Pig, Sylvester and Marvin the Martian. Although the series will debut in the fall, it doesn’t yet have a premiere date.

Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote will be the stars of 3-D shorts that will play before movies, starting with the July 30 release of "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore."

The changes come after several reinventions, some of which fell flat with viewers, had lowered the profile of the venerable cartoon franchise. "Baby Looney Tunes," a show on the former WB network and the Cartoon Network, fizzled, as did a futuristic version called "The Loonatics Unleashed."

“The bar had gone so low that we could only go up,” said Sam Register, executive vice president of creative affairs at Warner Brothers Animation.

  1. For the love of God, PLEASE forget the reincarnation, and just give us UNCUT originals!
The originals were brilliantly written, scored and animated. Every attempt to bring back Bugs and the boys, resulted in insipid, sophomoric, pun-filled efforts which appealed to no one.
The beauty of the original Looney Tunes shorts was, the intelligence of the scripting. The writers seemed to direct those gems to a college-educated crowd (See: “What’s Opera, Doc?”, “Devil May Hare”, “The Rabbit of Seville”, etc.), not to the lowest common denominator.
Knowing how studios pander to 18-34s, we’re likely to see Bugs as the over-sexed hare, Daffy as a moronic California-surfer duck, Tweety will surface as an angst-ridden teen, and The Tasmanian Devil, (NOT “TAZ”) will likely be simply a sight gag, suffering from flatus.
I’m sure in keeping with today’s politically-correct atmosphere, Elmer Fudd will hunt with a paint gun, Sylvester will lose the speech impediment, Foghorn Leghorn would be charged with animal cruelty, while Wile E. Coyote will be a vegan.
Please, pretty please, inflict no further damage on this wonderful stable of characters. The originals still hold up well, so why not just dig them out of mothballs? Otherwise, it would be much more respectful to let that old gray-haired hare remain buried.

  2. 2 comments about this idea: 1) It’s a good idea to keep these characters around and create something new. So good idea 2) But roomemates?!!! Cul de sac???!!! This is a bad idea. Come on Warner Bros. Why did these cartoons become classics? Recapture THAT! Cartoon shorts with people blowing up and edgy humor. Do it the same way as the classics as if they haven’t stopped producing those cartoon shorts. This “living on the same street” crap is lame.
The original idea to do new stuff is good…and Disney should consider it for Mickey and Donald too. I’m not talking about the lame stuff they have on Disney Channel with those characters now. More classic “funny” cartoon shorts.

  3. Excellent job.

  4. iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  5. Interesting thoughts here. I appreciate you taking the time to share them with us all. It’s people like you that make my day 🙂

  6. Kudos to you! This is a really good blog here and I love your style of writing. How did you get so good at blogging?
