Here’s a Novel Way Syfy Is Dealing with Viewer Complaints: Let Fans Create Their Own Saturday Night Creature-Feature

Jun 22, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Fans are constantly emailing Syfy with complaints, questions and compliments about its movies, and so the network has come up with a new way for directing those ideas from viewers: let them create their own Saturday night creature-feature, reports The Hollywood Reporter

Fans will be able to pitch ideas and vote on the film’s choices, ranging from dialogue to wardrobe and how the characters die, the report says.

The network is creating a production site called B Movie Mogul to help create the script, which will result in a two-hour movie to air next year. The first step is getting fans to vote on which of three concepts to focus on: an apocalypse tale, a Bermuda Triangle story, or a Roswell, New Mexico-based alien feature, the report says.

"This is where entertainment is going and just the start of many more things of this nature for Syfy," says Thomas Vitale, executive vice president of programming and original movies at the network.

  1. This smells of a disaster in the making.
    Here’s a suggestion for Syfy.
Go to any bookstore and go to the science fiction section. Randomly select about two dozen books based on the following criteria: 1) Place any book back on the shelf if the cover shows a dragon, unicorn, vampire, werewolf, elf, or any indication of “fantasy” 2) No more than one book per author.
Contact those twelve science fiction authors. Make sure that each on has at least a dozen SF books to their credit. Offer those that do positions as show program/development consultants.
    Take their advice.
Or better yet, just hire Harlan Ellison.

  2. This is a great gimmick for an extremely loyal fanbase. Will they get an emmy winner? Likely not. But will their hardcore fanbase bring a lot of friends into the fold to see the final product – you bet. In this world of social media, this is a great idea to keep their core fans invigorated and bring in some curious people to increase those numbers.
