Microsoft Readying Huge Marketing Push to Debut Kinect, a Rival to Wii, for the Holidays

Oct 18, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Microsoft will be tapping a half-billion dollar marketing budget to roll out a competitor to the Wii, reports Claire Atkinson in the New York Post

The software giant will be using soda cans to cereal boxes to promote Kinect, a controller-free rival to Wii, to grab consumers before the holidays, the story says. It also will take over YouTube’s home page and to have a presence on Nickelodeon and Disney Web sites to reach out to kids as well as parents, the article notes.

Kinect uses a sensor, camera and microphone to track players’ moves and translate them into on-screen actions, such as dancing, the story says. Like Wii, there’s no handset involved.

  1. Just check out at the abundance of Amazon reviews for Kinect (mostly 5 stars). many people I know are also uploading many Kinect videos on youtube. All smiles and laughs. You have to give MS their props. It’s a hit.

  2. I have to confess, I’ve been a huge Venture Natal/Kinect sceptic ever because it was announced with that sham Milo walkthrough and an awful lot of hyperbole. I have been making an attempt to keep an open thoughts but the various rumours that have circulated about house, lighting and multiplayer issues have been a trigger for concern. The advertising resolution that Microsoft took to place this in the fingers of mainstream journalists and celebrities rather than anybody who really has experience and experience writing about gaming was extraordinarily worrying.

  3. Well, not totally sure about it btw…
