HBO and Martin Scorsese are extending their partnership — which has already yielded “Boardwalk Empire,” with a high-profile rock ‘n’ roll drama also in the works. The new project is “Cortes,” with Benicio Del Toro poised to portray Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, Deadline.com reports.
The project is written and executive produced by Chris Gerolmo (“Mississippi Burning”), directed and exec produced by Scorsese and also exec produced by Del Toro.
“‘Cortes’ will tell the sweeping story of Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes, who brought down the Aztec empire; Malinche, the Mayan girl who helped him do it; and Montezuma, the Aztec leader he befriended and finally put in chains,” the story reports.
The article adds: “In addition to Gerolmo and Oscar winners Scorsese and Del Toro, ‘Cortes’ is executive produced by Laura Bickford, Del Toro’s producing partner on ‘Che’; Del Toro’s manager Rick Yorn; and Emma Tillinger Koskoff, president of production for Scorsese’s Sikelia Prods.”
