GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump is standing firm after declaring he will boycott this week’s debate on Fox News. The AP reports that the move comes amid a clash between Trump and the cable network over who should moderate the debate, scheduled for Thursday night.
With the Iowa caucuses on tap for Monday, the debate is seen as an opportunity for Republican candidates to make their “closing arguments” before the first vote of the presidential campaign. But in interviews Wednesday, Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said Trump “knows when to walk away from a bad deal.” Referring to Fox News, he said: “They think they can toy with Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump doesn’t play games.”
Trump apparently took exception to Fox News’ inclusion of Megyn Kelly as a debate moderator, but the AP notes that “a sarcastic statement from Fox appeared to push him over the edge.” The statement indicated that the leaders of Russia and Iran “both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president,” adding that “Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”
