Barbara Walters Reportedly Thinks ABC Execs Have Ruined ‘The View’

Barbara Walters, who launched the morning talk institution “The View” in 1997, thinks executives at ABC have ruined the show, according to a report by The New York Post’s Page Six, which cites an unnamed source.

Walters “fears the show will be remembered for its petty backstage bickering and revolving door of talent,” the story reports.

The article quotes the source saying: “She feels they’ve ruined the franchise that she and Bill Geddie built. Instead of focusing on smart, educated women with strong talent, they cast uninformed child actors on the show. The legacy has been compromised because of poor casting and bad leadership under ABC News.”

The report adds: “Walters is so over the show that she even ditched a post-election appearance, which reunited original hosts Debbie Matenopoulos, Meredith Vieira, Joy Behar and Star Jones. Walters’ longtime rep told us she was vacationing with her daughter in Florida.

The report quotes the rep for Walters saying: “It was a prearranged vacation for the two of them. She calls the control room multiple times a week to offer her suggestions. She has a wonderful relationship with the show.”

An ABC rep also had positive things to say about the situation between the network and Walters. “There’s no better producer than Barbara Walters, and we’re always grateful for her notes about the show,” the rep said. “The ratings are up, and we’re very proud of the team.”

Meanwhile, the show’s recent talent churn continues. As we reported previously, host Candace Cameron Bure announced last week that she is leaving the show. (Watch her announcement below.)

The Post quotes an insider saying of Bure’s exit: “She was at a ‘Hot Topics’ meeting and said she didn’t feel well. She went home and no one heard from her for several weeks — even her close friends at the show. People thought she was about to have a breakdown because she was exhausted. She didn’t return anyone’s calls and went AWOL. We were not surprised when she returned and asked to get out of her contract.”

  1. Some of the so called talent on the current and past shows should question whether woman should have received the right to ever VOTE

  2. I agree with Barbara. They have ruined the show. I used to record it and watch it everyday, but I can’t even do that anymore. Barbara’s “girls” showed respect to guests regardless of what their political views were. I was happy that Joy came back, but now I can’t stand to listen to her. She flubs her lines too much and should stick with being a comedian not a wanna be news reporter. I have tried to watch it after the election, but I still can’t make it past 5 minutes. I hope Paula leaves soon before she loses her credibility as being a true News Reporter.
