The annual year-end report is out on which TV shows were the most heavily pirated during the year, and for the fifth consecutive year, the “winner” is HBO’s “Game of Thrones.”

TorrentFreak, which monitors downloading on BitTorrent sites, notes that the show in second place is also the same as last year: “The Walking Dead.” However, a newcomer, “Westworld,” entered the rankings this year in third place.

The report notes that interest in “Game of Thrones,” as determined by traffic on BitTorrent sites, was “roughly on par with last year. The highest number of people actively sharing an episode across several torrents was 350,000 at its peak; this was right after the season finale came online.”

Rounding out the Top 5 are “The Flash” at No. 4 (up from No. 5 last year) and “Arrow” at No. 5 (down from No. 4). Last year’s No. 3 show, “The Big Bang Theory,” fell out of the Top 5, slipping to No. 6.

TorrentFreak adds: “We see a continuation of the trend of downloaders showing an increased interest in high-quality video. In recent years, many pirates have moved from 480p copies to 720p and 1080p videos, in part thanks to better broadband availability.”
