Why ‘Wonder Woman’s’ Opening in Tunisia Was Blocked

The global blockbuster “Wonder Woman” won’t be opening Thursday in Tunisia as scheduled after a lawsuit was filed by the Tunisian Association of Young Lawyers, Variety reports. The group is concerned about the movie’s Israeli-born lead actress, Gal Gadot, whom the group called a “champion Zionist.”

The move comes after the film was banned in Lebanon and pulled from a festival in Algeria, Variety notes. The publication cites local reports saying the court in Tunisia decided to halt the movie’s release while it examines the suit.

“As in Lebanon, where the film was banned May 31, the Tunisian Assn. of Young Lawyers filed a lawsuit on the grounds that Gadot had publicly praised Israel’s military actions during the 2014 war in Gaza,” Variety reports. “The group also pointed out that the actress had served in the Israeli army.”
