New KFC Commercial Upsets ‘Game of Thrones’ Viewers

A new commercial for KFC — you can watch it below — seems intended to be amusing while also paying tribute to HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” But some fans of the series have responded negatively to the spot, which is running in the U.K. and Ireland.

The ad features actor Kristian Nairn reprising his “Thrones” character Hodor as a frazzled KFC employee. US Magazine notes that the ad’s title, “Lunchtime Is Coming,” is a tribute to the “Game of Thrones” tagline “Winter Is Coming.”

But for some of the show’s fans, the similarities between the ad and the demise of Hodor on the show hit too close to home. A number of users commented on YouTube with unfavorable reactions.

A few examples:

  • “Why they gotta bring this back up? Making me cry watching a KFC commercial.”
  • “I’m having a Game of Thrones flashback, it’s too emotional.”
  • “Too soon.”

Here’s the commercial …
