Fallout From Attacks on Barron Trump: ‘SNL’ Writer Is Suspended, Public Apologies … and Another Presidential Kid Comes to the Rescue

The backlash continues after a number of observers seized the moment on the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration to launch attacks on his youngest son, 10-year-old Barron.

The most high-profile attack may have come from “Saturday Night Live” writer Katie Rich, as we reported Monday. Now TVGuide.com is reporting that Rich has been suspended from the show by NBC.

Rich’s tweet suggesting Barron would become “this country’s first homeschool shooter” prompted a torrent of outrage online and was quickly deleted. NBC wasn’t commenting, but TVGuide cites a source who’s familiar with the situation who says Rich was immediately placed on indefinite suspension.

The report notes that Rich’s name was missing from the credits for Saturday’s show.

Rich took to Twitter Monday to do damage control, writing: “I sincerely apologize for the insensitive tweet. I deeply regret my actions & offensive words. It was inexcusable & I’m so sorry.”

The Hill reported Monday evening that more than 79,000 people had signed a Change.org petition seeking to get Rich fired.

Another presidential offspring who suffered her own verbal abuse while in the White House added her voice to the fray. The Washington Times reports that Chelsea Clinton wrote about the incident on Facebook, commenting: “Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does — to be a kid.”

A commenter on Rich’s Twitter account noted that Chelsea Clinton was called the “White House dog” by Rush Limbaugh back in 1992, when Chelsea was 12.

Also wading into the Barron Trump controversy was Comedy Central contributor Stephen Spinola, who was retreating Monday after sending out a tweet calling Barron Trump “a very handsome date rapist-to-be.”

Spinola said Monday on Twitter: “I believe in Math and the stats are saying I made a bad joke. I truly apologize if it hurt Barron Trump’s feelings.”

The Washington Times notes that Julie Bowen, who appears on ABC’s “Modern Family,” got fallout from her Instagram posts showing pictures of Barron during the inaugural program with captions including, “Barron, a voting majority shares your horror.”

Bowen later offered clarification, posting a message that said: “I love that Barron is a kid being a kid. My kids would be a horror show at a public event! Just trying to keep it light.”

  1. Rich and Spinola should both be fired. It’s that simple. Their fake apologies are only for the purpose of keeping their jobs. They are not “sorry” for anything.

    • Bullcrap. Satire is sacred. Trump and his clan of idiots are fair game. If he lasts a year, I’d be surprised. Go Katie, Go!

  2. Keep her at her job. She might be right about that retard.

  3. I think they should have to take an anti-bullying sensitivity course & then be fired. Adults bullying a child is not funny.

  4. The comments about 10 year old BaronTrump are disgusting no child should be treated like that from so called adults, I am a Canadian and I saw the youngster at the Inauguration of his Father and that young Man did nothing to deserve the ignorance of some that think they know everything. He looked like a happy young boy enjoying one of the most important days of his young life. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

  5. Good for Katie. Her aplogy is full and complete.
She deserves to go forward and learn.
Would be very cool if Mr. and Mrs. Trump accepted the apology and encouraged NBC to re-instate Ms.Rich.
But… in the second case, Spinola’s conditional apology makes his lame joke even worse. What a horrible attempt at an apology. He should be apologizing to the parents, and without the “if.”
His bit was not satire, not clever, and as George Carlin would say, “not funny.”

  6. PLEASE for the love of g[G]od or whatever you believe in, make this stop.

No matter who won on election day, I thought this insanity would stop…. It just continues.

Both sides look like a bunch of idiots. Stop being a bunch of babies and go do something good in this world.

    Steps off soapbox.

  7. Credit Chelsea Clinton for her class. She didn’t have to say anything, especially under the circumstances. But she showed the type of family she comes from. One that can show a lot of intelligence and integrity even in difficult circumstances

  8. Children are off limits. No ifs, ands, or buts. Period!

  9. Liberalism is a mental disorder. Both should be fired.

    • Fuck off.

  10. Thank You Thane “The Ignorant” for proving I.B. Golem’s point in Spades !!!
